BITUMEN

Providing creative solutions by professional designers

Bitumen is a low-grade of crude oil which is composed of complex, heavy hydrocarbons. In an oil reservoir, bitumen is a thick, viscous fluid and must be extracted from the ground. When extracting it, a lot of heat and effort must be used to upgrade it to a better product. Although bitumen is hard to extract from the ground, it can bubble naturally to the surface of the Earth in petroleum seeps. These seeps are places where fossil fuels and petroleum products leak out of the Earth instead of being trapped deep below the ground. In these seeps, bitumen, asphalt, and tar bubble up into pools. Additionally, bitumen is the main fossil fuel component of oil sands. When bitumen combines with asphaltines a solid is formed that is useful for paving roads.

Properties of bitumen

Purity

After special tests on bitumen, we can express the amount of impurities.

Softness

The temperature at which bitumen changes from solid to liquid.

Degree of penetration

The harder the bitumen, the lower the degree of penetration.

The difference between mineral bitumen and petroleum bitumen

The number of acidification and saponification of petroleum bitumen is less than mineral bitumen

Petroleum bitumen sulfur is less than 1%, mineral bitumen has more sulfur. Trinidad bitumen has 3.8%, California mineral bitumen 3.9% and Mexican bitumen 3.2% sulfur.

Petroleum bitumen oil is more than mineral bitumen, watery petroleum bitumen oil reaches up to 70% of their weight

Petroleum bitumen is pure, mineral bitumen has mineral bodies and up to 1% ash.

BITUMEN 60/70

The bitumen 60/70 with penetration value measured at 25 degrees Celsius, plays a crucial role in road construction. This specific grade is commonly used as an asphalt binder, creating a strong adhesive layer between the base and aggregates. Bitumen 60/70 exhibits exceptional binding capabilities, ensuring a robust bond between aggregates for the production of high-quality asphalt, paving materials, and waterproofing agents.

Additionally, its flexibility allows for expansion and contraction of the pavement due to temperature changes. Furthermore, it provides durability and resistance to water, making it suitable for various weather conditions.

Differences of 60/70 and bitumen 80/100

Standard bitumen 60/70 has penetration between 60 to 70, whereas bitumen 80/100 has penetration between 80 to 100. Additionally, the softening point of 60/70 is 48 to 52, while that of 80/100 is 42 to 48C.

Usage of bitumen 60/70

1. Road Construction

Firstly, paving grade bitumen 60/70 is extensively utilized as a binder in the construction of roads and highways. In addition to serving as a binder, it contributes significantly to enhancing the durability and strength of the road surface.

2. Asphalt Mixtures

Moreover, it is a key component in the production of asphalt mixtures or hot mix asphalt (HMA), which is used for surfacing roads, parking lots, and other paved areas.

3. Roofing

Furthermore, it is also employed in the manufacturing of roofing materials, such as asphalt shingles and roofing felt and membrane roll sheet. Moreover, its waterproofing properties make it suitable for protecting buildings from water damage.

4. Waterproofing

Additionally, due to its water-resistant properties, it is used in the production of waterproofing materials for various applications, including foundations and basements.

5. Pavement Sealants

Furthermore, it is used in pavement sealants and coatings to effect the durability and longevity of paved surfaces.

6. Industrial Applications

Lastly, it is used in various industrial applications, such as corrosion protection for pipes and tanks.
